5 inches is the absolute highest you would want to go as far as backspacing
is concerned. Even with 5", you'll want to run at least one 1/4" spacer. He
won't need to use extended studs if the wheels use mag or shank-style lug
nuts. But since they are alloys, they might use acorns...in which case, he
should definitely get extended studs because acorns will not grab enough
thread with spacers.
