Your roadster buddy is correct! When you turn the key to START, a full 12
volts is sent directly to the coil. Not necessarily because starting takes a
hotter spark, but to compensate for the current going to the starter. When the
key returns to the ON position, the ballast resistor comes into play, reducing
the current to the coil to about 7 or 9 volts. Saves the coil from overheating.
If the motor actually fires just as you let the key return to the ON position,
you probably have no current to the coil at the START position. Get out the
wiring diagram and start tracing wires. You may have loosened one when you
pulled the steering column.

Seems like it's gotta be ignition. A roadster buddy thought there
was some 'trick' to the Roadsters that added a little extra
spark/voltage on cold starting, but he didn't understand the
electronics.
