If your drum has rust on it, it is a teltale sign of the shoes not touching
it to keep it clean. That means your wheel cylinder has not been
functioning at all. whenever you change the brake shoes, to avoid a leaking
cylinder, always re hone the wheel cylinders. never do just one wheel brake
jobs. At the least do the two back wheels together, or the two front wheels
together, or preferably, all four at the same time. Don't forget to put
lubricant on the backing plate, where the shoes ride. They will work much
better. On caliper brakes,(disc) they do not require wheel cylinders to be
touched, unless you see it is leaking, or has broken rubber. The datsun
2000 has front caliper brakes and should not require much more than changing
the pads. When you put new pads on and it will not go on to the roters
because of the extra thickness, crack open the bleeder valve and the
cylinder will move very easily. the fluid you lose will not even be
noticed.
