Take the alternator to a reputable rebuilder.  They should be able to
figure out what the problem is and repair it for well under $100.

One possible cause of your problem, if it turns out to be a blown regulator,
is the lack of n indicator lamp in the exciter wire.  In the cars that used
this type of alternator there was a dash light to indicate when the alternator
failed.  Most folks just wire this lead to a switched hot connection, causing
higher than normal current to flow into that lead when the alternator is not
putting out anything, but the ignition is on, such as when you are starting
the car.  I would consider putting a light in series with this wire, even if 
it is under the hood where it will never be seen.
