Don't THINK so.  My new 67-1/2 was born with it on the left side, and it
took awhile for me to get accustomed to the '68, right side.  I have
often wondered why the change!!

I agree with you about liking it on the right, convenient to the shift,
and presents no problem (except in shifting to other cars).
