Well, yeah.  Have you checked out
http://www.sonic.net/~kyle/ztech.html - there's an article on
SUs and such; basically, heavier fluid will help to dampen out
the wacky vacuum signals, and a blob of sealer over the outboard
bushings will seal them up pretty well.  You're stuck with the
leaky inboards, though....

Well, FWIW, you probably can't rebuild the throttle shafts
yourself anyway - the shafts wear out themselves, requiring new
shafts; rebushing the carb body needs machining;  PLUS -
rebuilding a set of SUs takes about half an hour each, there's
not that much there....  even when you factor in running back to
the parts store, tearing down, and reassembly, you can still do
it in WAY under a day.

If your shafts are too far gone for use, you should either get
another set of good used ones, rebuild them, and swap 'em in, or
(as you suggested) wait until the crappy weather comes back and
send your existing ones out to be fixed up....
