My dad proved this with a Subaru and the air cleaner intake- took the
whole top off, got an acid shower, and a few rather deep cuts.
Fortunately, he wears glasses AND there was snow on the ground to rinse
with IMMEDIATELY. As it was, it took a few days before his vision
recovered. The other thing that often happens is that something gets
hot enough to burn...

Well, you actually can buy fuses of high rating (200A or so) that will
"sort of" fuse the circuit. Their drawback is that they aren't
instantaneous, so sparks still fly, and wires still heat. They get used
in many places on electric cars, along with circuit breakers and current
monitors, and they do help. I'd use one if I was remoting my battery...

Or at least mess it up, but good. And this goes for dropping a wrench
onto the wrong part of the starter motor, too!
