With regards to when the Datsun name was dropped, the 1983 Nissan Motor Co.
annual report states the following -
"We have taken the occasion of our 50th anniversary (1984) to look back on our
international growth and assess Nissan's reception in the international market,
and how we can further increase our international recognition. One result of
this assessment is embodied in the unified marketing of all our vehicles under
the Nissan name, rather than under both Datsun and Nissan as in the past."
In Australia (I assume the rest of the world was the same) for several years
prior to 1984 all cars had a small Nissan emblem on the rear of the car and had
Nissan's name on the dash board, the Datsun name was always much more
prominent. In 1983 the Nissan emblem on most cars was the same size as the
Datsun one. In 1984 and 1985 the cars had a small Datsun emblem on the rear,
from 1986 on, the Datsun name was totally gone. One odd exception to this is
that the Datsun name was used on forklifts sold here until long after 1984.
