Regarding your car's coil performance; you probably now have a "hotter" spark.
That's o.k. to a point (no pun intended). Coils are transformers that simply
transform the power applied. The voltage applied multiplied by the resulting
current equals the power applied. Your new coil probably has a higher output
voltage. In addition your old coil may have begun to have increased resistance
which robs your coil of it's ability to transform efficiently. We are talking
shades of gray here. Monitor your points and plugs for pitting and wear. A
hotter
coil will exact a maintenance cost on these associated parts.
To that end, after 1500's, Datsun began to add a series resistor to the coil
input (primary) that was only in the circuit when the ignition switch was in the
"run" position. In the "start" position the resistor was switched out for for
maximum spark while starting. This would seem to be the best of both worlds. Hot
spark for start, then kick in the resistor for maximum point life/minimum
maintenance cost. So although all Datsun roadster coils may look the same in the
wrecking yard they not be.
