Adjust for octane dosnt mean to adjust something differant, it means if
you set it to where it says to, but you get pinging, then you need
to retard it a bit (about 2 degrees at a time) until the pinging goes
away. If its not pinging, and down on power, then you can
advance it until pinging just starts, and then retard until it just
quits. Its not an exact science. Withen reason, all else being
equal, the more advance you have without pinging is adding
horsepower and better mpg. Going up in octane will allow
a bit more spark advance and more power mpg also. Many
new computerized cars have a knock senser which actually
adjusts timing if pinging occurs, of course its also adjusted based
on about a bazillion other factors and sensors to get good
emissions also.
