As it is unlikely that an engine, set up for leaded when new, is already converted to hard seats, it is much better for the beginner to have a competent machinest look the head over. Also, lapping a valve in can give an average seal, but is totally dependant on how good a job was done the last time the head was off. Lastly, few people have a true straight-edge to check flatness. Also check for porosity with all aluminum heads. Dan & Susan |
