Ron,
This is how I do it: First, remove the striker from the body. Put two
thicknesses of 3M masking tape around the body opening and on the edge of the
door so you won't chip the paint. Car should be sitting on a flat level
surface. Adjust the door to hang with as even a gap as possible all around.
Remember the Nissan commercial with the Altima on a spit and they rolled the
marble around all the panel gaps? Forget it; these cars will never be that
accurate. There are 8 bolts where the hinge bolts to the body and 8 where
the hinge bolts to the door so you have lots of ways to adjust the up/down
and in/out variations, but no fore/aft, unless you put shims in. If you ever
have to remove the door, it's easiest to scribe around the hinges on the body
mounting area, then remove the bolts holding it onto the door at that point
and don't disturb the ones at hinge to door.
Now, once you have gotten the door hanging so it looks as good as you can get
it, put the striker back on and the weatherstrip you will be using. Then
adjust the striker so it closes with just enough "slam" and the body and door
still line up just right when it closes. It will take some practice to get
it just right and it's mainly an exercise in trial and error. The lock part
(on the door) engages the striker with two "clicks" and you need to get it to
shut just right as it clicks the second time. You'll see what I mean if you
click it shut with your finger then pull up on the door handle to release it.
Good luck.
