I've donethis on several L-series engines. Once you've got the radiator, etc.
outof the way,
1. Unbolt the 4 pan bolts going into the cover plus 2 or more on each
side.
2. Unbolt the 2 bolts at the front lower edge of the head into the top
of the cover.
3. Unbolt the cover
4. Pry the front of the pan down for clearance (you won't need much. Be
carefull not to bend the front gasketed surface of the pan!)
5. Pry the cover off (forget saving the side gaskets but SAVE THE HEAD
GASKET!!! Be carefull not to tear the front of the head gasket. You may
lose some material on it's mating face but don't tear it near the block.)
To replace:
1. Clean all gasketed surfaces (possilbly with the exception of the top
of the cover which contacts the head gasket).
2. Apply adequate (not copious) amounts of Permatech #2 to both sides of
the gaskets and install on cover.
3. Apply adequate Permatech to the top surface (be sure to get a good
bead at the interface of the head/cover/block).
4. Slip the cover back on over the locating pins and reverse the
unbolting procedure.
Good luck
