The regulator for the gauges can and will go bad, and it is the feed for
the temp. and fuel gauges. It can be checked with a multi-meter, one
wire is 12 volts from the ignition switch and the other is the lower
volts to the gauges. (seems like it was around 4 volts but not sure)
The oil leaking from the coil is a sure sign it is on it's way out but I
don't think the resistor has to do with the coil, it's to make the
points last longer. A lot of the newer electronic systems don't use
one. I've been using a magnetic pickup and MSD system with an MSD
blaster 2 coil since 91 with no resistor in the circuit. Just some
