I'd suggest
finding a system that's pretty easy, common (if everyone's familiar
with it, they'll be able to give you advice on what to do/ not do!) and
tolerant of application conditions and temps.
I've painted 3 cars with PPG's Concept (DCC) single stage, and have
learned how to get a pretty good finish with it. I think it's an
acrylic urethane... My next project will be 2- stage (base/clear) also
using the DCC line, as the products handle pretty much the same.
I've had the chance to play with other finishes (Spies, Imron,
different PPG products) as other friends use different products, and
they all handle really differently. Some like higher air pressure,
different coat thicknesses, and even respond differently to
temperature. I don't paint enough to recommend one over the other- just
find one you can get from a reliable supplier who knows their product,
will help you as much as possible, and is sympathetic to the
do-it-yerselfer. Some are, some aren't.
And then practice. I painted the inside of the trunk first, and the
little cover plate over the fuel sender last- the difference is
AMAZING! The trunk's all orange-peely-shrunken, while the cover's
almost glass. I learned a LOT in the 3-4 spray sessions in- between...
So I would recommend PPG, if only because it's a 'known' brand. Imron
(basf?) is typically similar, if maybe easier to handle, Sikkens flows
OK and is supposedly harder, and Spies applies pretty well, but it's
harder to find, and harder to find a distributor- I don't know how well
it holds up...
Of course, if the best, friendliest body supply shop in town likes any
particular 'name' product and is willing to help you through learning
it, go for it!
