Hi Mark,
I am not sure which model is used but Mike Kerr sells them. I think that
they are ~75 bucks. Mine puts out 100 amps!!! This is much more than the
stock ~35 amp alt. I have also seen alt. at Kragen and Grand that look to
be the same. Its sold as a 'nascarr' brand I believe. The alt. are the
more modern self exciting-self regulating one wire type. I believe that
mine puts out a better regulated voltage under loads. The alt is regulated
to put out ~14.5 volts with different amounts of current, whatever is
needed by your 100 watt driving lights or your big stereo or whatever.
What I do not like about my alt is the pulley ratio. Because they
are self exciting they do not turn on untill you hit a certain RPM. On my
car its like 2500 rpm. So all the time I am sitting in traffic or creeping
around the
city my batt is discharging. If I could get a different size pully
(smaller) for the alt I would like to. Have it turn on at say 1800 rpm, but
then maybe it would spin itself to bits at 5000rpm?? Who knows.
Wiring is easy, it just depends on if you want your amp gauge to work.
Most simple way is to just hook the one wire to the + terminal on the batt.
Make sure you wire all your high power stuff straight to the batt. This
way there will be no high super high currents going through the wiring
harness.
Mounting the thing. I do not think that the GM alt. will fit in
the stock location on smog cars. Its best to mount it in the nonsmog
position on the
passenger side. I did not have a right side alt. mount so I faked it. I
drilled
out the smog pump mounts to take a very beefy 3/8" bolt. To make the new
alt match the pully you need to space it out. Use one 3/8" big hex nut and
two or three washers. For the top adjustable mount I used the stock unit
from the nissian alt. It works fine with no spacers needed. THis setup
works well and it does not look kludgey at all. You can not see the stack
of washers cause the alt hides them.
You will need to get a new fan belt. The stock unit is to small/big
sorry
