hello,
Having made the Las Vegas to Shasta run several times I would have to say
that if you wanted scenic you should have turned west at Lida Junction then to
Bishop and up 395. It's not much farther and much more scenic, also not as
hot.

Being from D/FW, having lived in Riverside, CA, and with my folks living
in northern NM, I would have agreed until we drove out to Shasta last
summer. Rather than go north through the California central valley, we
turned north at Kingman and stopped in Vegas. From Vegas we went north
along the NV/CA border to Reno.
I have NEVER seen expanses so barren, desolate, and FLAT. Truly
incredible. Reminded me very much of the settings for the old Clint
Eastwood spaghetti westerns. Makes West Texas look like the Hawaiian
Islands.
