A previous response is basically correct regarding EasyOff. The cleaner is
strongly basic - Caustic. It will quickly etch aluminum. The way
professionals shine aluminum is with a polishing wheel of cotton and a bar of
Tripoli compound. The compound will generally remove 320 grit sanding marks
or finer. Once smooth, another cotton wheel is used to apply a rouge for
brilliance and protection. The problem with rouge is that it has a very low
melting point and will not stand up under the hood with all the ambient heat.
Instead, I like a product sold by Eastwood called "Nylac" for clear coating
aluminum and other metals. The bright work under my hood will last a couple
years minimum once cleared. Be sure to wipe the polished metal down with a
solvent prep before spraying.
