Tom,
To get to the top bolt on the starter - jack up the car, get a short
open end 14mm wrench
stick your hand in through the place where you removed the triangular piece,
feel around on top of the starter, find the nut with your fingers - you will
not be able to see it. Put the wrench on it break it free and back it out -
it takes a while and you might only get 1/4 turn at a time at first.
Also you might need to rotate the wrence 180 degrees keeping the same end
down. I'm right handed but I have found this easier using my left hand. If
you absolutely can't force your hand in there put on a bunch of extensions
and an elbow socket and come at it from the front. You will have to take
the breather off the carbs if you try this approach. The first method is
the easiest.
I've done this with long and short starters and always gotten them out.
