I spoke with Carroll Smith over the phone this weekend.

A while back, Ray had told us this and I faxed the post to Carroll:

     >On the last rebuild I couldn't resist trying Automotive Racing
     >Product head bolts (Carroll Smith recommends them highly). I
     >followed ARP's recommendations to use their special moly lube
     >starting with a dry, clean threads and to torque in two steps
     >stopping this time at only 45 ft lbs. I called ARP to question this
     >seemingly low torque value and was reassured that it would be fine
     >for the output of my motor.
     >The motor ran fine for 3 trips and then the head gasket blew in the
     >rear just below the freeze plug...

He wanted to know who the idiot at ARP was and that 45 ft. lbs. was
ridiculous. He said he'd check into it and get back with me.

I just got a call from my wife. Carroll called my home number to tell me
that he talked to ARP and they are as confused as we are about it. Then he
faxed this note to you all:

To the Lotus fanatics of the world:

        5/26 My fans among you,

My schedule does not allow me to get to the bottom of Ray Jang's
problem re:his Elan and the ARP headbolts. Chris Brown of ARP will
reply via my friend Ken Claiborne. However I am certain that there
is a very logical explanation. It remains my firm conviction that
ARP manufacturers design the finest engine fasteners on this planet
        - and opinion shared by ILMOR and Honda among others. Keep the
        faith!

        Carroll Smith

He said that he was leaving today to be out of town for a while (3 weeks?).

     Andres asks:

     >Would you have a telephone or fax number (or better yet an E-mail
     >address) for the Driving Force, Inc., which makes the bump steer
     >measuring device recommended by Carroll Smith in Engineer to Win?

I'll ask him when he returns.

     Ken Claiborne
