It is true that using the proper thickness gasket material is important.
However, it is still possible to make your own. Just buy the correct
thickness gasket stock from your friendly local auto-parts house.

Kevin, oil pump internal tolerances are set up by varying gasket thickness.
Too much clearance will cause pressure loss, too little can bind the pump.
Oil pump kits come with two or more base gaskets, each with a different
thickness, typically .003 and .005, and you must carefully measure pump gear
end play with plastigauge to determine which gasket to use. Nickel and
diming your oil pump repair is good way to kill an engine, main bearings,
rod bearings, crank journals, it's an expensive mistake. It's much cheaper
buy proper gasket sets, measure carefully, install carefully, than it is to
rebuild your freshly killed motor. Do it once, do it right, drive a lot.

If it is a simple flat gasket, make your own. It doesn't matter if it is a
complex shape, they are still easy to make. Punch a couple of the bolt
holes with a proper punch then fit the blank to the pump using a couple of
bolts.
Gasket material is readily available at autp parts stores.
