I have a 72 RR, with an engine number on the front of the right head. The
number is something like 355A0001065. I understand that range rover
engines usually have their numbers located just under the right hand exhasut
manifold.
So is this a SD1 motor?
Or is it a really early A series RR engine?
Were there any known problems with the early A series engines?
Does the 355 indicate it was an engine made for the local UK market, the
vehicle is a RHD Australian export version.

Does anyone have a definitive list of how to identify
the Rover/Landrover V8 engine block numbers from say
1975 to present?, or info on how or where to find
them.
For the chap asking about an SD1 engine date of
manufacturer for SVA, try asking Rimmer Brothers on
01522-567 432 ( I have 2 SD1 engines. 1 I know is from
a 1984 car and is prefixed by 11A and I have an
earlier one which is prefixed by 10A, how much earlier
I don't really know)
