Fred:
The correct under-hood color would be the same as the exterior color.
Not flat black!
On top of the body color, flat black paint was splashed on the frame
rails and inner fenders behind the grille area on many cars. I'm
guessing this was to prevent bright paint from showing through the black
mesh grille.
The engine color from 1972 would have been gloss black. Many of the
engines in these later cars were painted so badly that the reddish
orange primer shows as the pre-dominant color.
