I found that the type that screws on from the top tend to allow the oil to
drain back into the crank if the engine is not run frequently. This means a
10 to 15 second period at start up with no oil going to the bearings ( which
would also be dry) while the filter fills with oil.
I'd go for the down pointing filter which won't drain.
Also the easy of access is negated by the major mess cause at each filter
change
