Hi,

The only "Matador" I know is a quite hideous 70's AMC barge, but I can give you
some information on Tempo.
Tempo was a quite well known maker of commercial vehicles in Germany from 1926
on.
Most of their trucks were threewheelers, powered by puny 2-cylinder ILO
motorcycle engines. They were very popular just after worldwarII, mainly because
they were about the only commercial vehicles available new.
Most drivers hated them because of their unreliability and their tendency to
fall
over in corners.

In 1956 the Tempo company was bought by Hanomag, a big German truck and van
manufacturer, which later in turn was taken over by Mercedes-Benz.
Around this time the company built a small 4-wheeled, 4 cylinder van called
Tempo
Viking.
This car was equiped with a 948cc engine which might very well be an Austin
A-series engine, also used in the Austin Healey Sprite (among many others).
I'll attach a picture and some technical dates I've found in a Dutch book, so
you
can see if this is the van in question.
If it is, I guess your best bet for more information would be the archives of
Mercedes-Benz.

TECHNICAL DATES:
TEMPO VIKING RAPID BUS

Engine: 4 cyl in line, 948 cc
Bore x stroke: 63 x 76 mm
Compression ratio: 8:1
Power: 32 bhp/ 4100 tpm
Max. Speed: 85 km/h (about 55 mph)
Length: 474 cm
width: 172 cm
Height: 190 cm
Weight: 1020 kg
Wheelbase: 240 cm
Track front: 142 cm
Track rear: 142 cm

I hope this is of any help to you.
It seems to me your friend has a quite unique and rare vehicle there!
I hope he will cherish it.

Good luck,

Marc
