Dear S.O.L. Brothers & Sisters,
I'm well into the third month of rebuilding the engine &
tranny of "The Green Man", my TR4. The block and sleeves
have been to the machine shop. The sleeves were bored out
to .040 over and the block was boiled out... No problem.
The as far as the moving parts are concerned, the news si
not so good. After testing OK at first the crank proved
cracked on a second magnafluxing. (the machinist said he
though "It sounded funny" when he started to work on it).
(sigh). I just picked up a used crank that I ordered from
a salvage yard in Wisconsin (according to Chris, the owner
the crank has been tested and is OK). If the weather gods
smile I will take the crank to the machine shop tomorrow
to be balanced and shot peened... The flywheel is there
being lightened. Needless to say the outlay for the "new"
crankshaft has put a crimp in my hobby exchecquer and will
delay the green beast's return to the road (`tho I still
want to be back driving it in the spring).
Scott, regarding the seats of your TR4. I took my seats to
a reupholstery shop to be redone(with the kit from Roadster
Factory) The total charge for both seats was $185... I'd
shop around to see if you can find a cheaper shop. BTW, my
TR4 VIN# is CT4852L... we're exactly 1000 cars apart!!!
Tom Storey, Though I'm not an expert the fast cranking of
your Spit kinda points (for me) to no spark. When a similar
event occured to my TR4 at the Albany NATC, the culprit was
a burned through coil to distributor lead.
Take care all,
Greg "I have not yet begun to pay" Petrolati
