When I took the engine out of my 1275 Midget, I left the transmission in
the car. This is fine as long as you can get all the bell-housing bolts off
which I was able to do. However it's a bit of a job lining up the drive
shaft with the clutch on the way back in since the front cross-member gets
in the way. It is (just) possible though. SO, both ways are difficult, but
engine only is better if you don't have good access or robust lifting gear
