Tom:
Well, I happened to find a Spit still in the hands of the original owner! So,
as far as I can tell (and what the PO said) it is original. The only oddity
so far was a clutch cylinder from a 1500. But I replaced that with proper
one.
The owner had spent a fortune on the car and kept very detailed records of
service and parts on a binder which he provided to me. If you saw a picture,
you would be amazed, but of course the closer look reveals that he tried to
fill in stone chips with a brush and the wrong color green. There was some
"bonnet" damage and the letters are missing.
Otherwise, the entire bonnet is rust free. The chrome one the seams is
perfect and from the middle line up, the paint is beautiful BRG.
I was amazed to find out how many spokes are broken when I took the wheels
off. Someone in a local club will refurbish them for $55 /wheel + parts.
This includes relacing spokes, trueing the wheels, bead blasting and
repainting/clear coating, putting in new tubes, balancing and remounting the
tires.
Seems like a good deal since new rims are $149 from Victoria British.
I was working on dissasembling the engine compartment this evening so that I
can clean/paint/replace some things to get it detailed.
BTW, I live in Delaware, but my wife is originally from Oakland (Actually
Alemeda).
Hope you got it runnning. The PO told me that the car was parked after the
last breakdown and he never got around to getting it fixed. Then, when they
had an estimate to bring it back to life, they decided that they were finished
spending money on it.
All it needed was a condenser, it had no spark. It started after that without
much problem with 6 year old gas in the tank (I put in some gas stabilizer and
octane boost first). I have a SU rebuild kit and I am going to get to that in
the next few weeks.
Talk to you later.

Hi thanks for your message! My Spit's body is in pretty good shape, being a
CA car, the front bonnet is a bit of a mess, but will do for now. The
engine is from a 1500 74', and the tranny also, with a type J overdrive.
The car has also been sitting for awhile, so I've been replacing all the
fluids and giving it a good thorough cleaning. The carpets are out and need
to be replaced...the entire dash area needs to be rewired...it had aVega(!)
engine in it during the late 70's I believe...It has the single Stromberg
CD carb, but I would like to find a set of dual Su's to rebuild...I can't
wait to get it on the road, I'm actually going to get a new battery for it
today, replace one fuel line, and it should start...wish me luck! Good
luck to you, where are you located? Tom
