This probably applies to any pot-metal fuel pump with press-in valves.
In my case, it's off a Ford Kent that used to be in someone's Cortina
but now lives in my Ginetta.

So I got a nice rebuild kit and took it apart. The manual says the
valves are either held in with two screws, one screw, or staked. Of
course, since I'm trying to take it apart, mine's staked. The intake
valve can be pressed out with a small punch from the back, but the
outlet valve can't be gotten to from the back. I tried punching the
staking back a little and then prying, sawing, and pulling to my
heart's content. All I managed to do was bend the top half of the
pump in the vise. Now the filter screen doesn't seal.

Fortunately, I got the whole motor from a referal off the net (Lea
Hyke, who passed me on to Pete Snyders), so I called up Pete and he
said "sure, I can give you another fuel pump". So, the second time
around, I drilled out the valve with a 3/4" drill. Worked pretty well
(it would have worked better if I had something about 1/64" smaller,
but big drills don't seem to come in small increments). I only had to
drill about half the depth to the valve seating face, so the new ones
still went in with a tight press fit. The staking took a little more
work since there was a larger gap between the walls and the valve at
the top.

Note: I wouldn't try this method without a drill press or milling
machine. If the pump isn't clamped down, the drill bit might try to
"climb" into the valve and chew everything up.
