RE MGC cam timing
A quick and easy way to check cam timing if the lobes are
symetrical:
Bring no.1 cylinder to TDC with timing marks lined up and on
firing stroke
Rotate 1 revolution again with timing marks lining up
Set valve lash at .004 or so (both the same) or if the head is
not on lay a straight edge across the cam followers.
If using the straight edge method both tappets should be the
same height.
If using the lash trick rotate the engine one more turn to TDC
and measure the lash again.
If the lash is equal or the tappets even you are in time.
The split overlap cam test works on anything that I have used
it on.
