I know this is too narrow a topic for the list, but I am having trouble
getting advice locally.

Here's the situation:

1) 18V Engine in Chesapeake VA, in need of work (like boring, skimming, and
turning of the crank) which was removed from:
2) '73 MGB in Williamsburg, VA, in need of engine
3) '88 Mazda RX-7 with new pistons, rings, cam bearings, valve guides,
gaskets, exhaust, and clutch parts in a box to be melded with 1 and 2
   above.
4) Access to a pickup truck.
5) Somewhat limited budget and itchy 2 month time-table.

If >anyone< has a recommendation for machine shops in this part of the
country, for head and block work, I'd be happy to hear it. Also, a rough
guess of machine shop cost, pointers to files describing rebuilds, etc.

Basically, the engine ingested a worm gear from a hose clamp, and it
knocked around the #3 piston. In addition, #3 and #4 pistons had very
broken-up rings. Oil consumption 1 qt/75 miles and no power. Crank
journals are out of round and have eaten one set of std bearings (noticable
wear in about 5000 miles, and the oil pressure didn't change when we
replaced the bearings).

The clutch was contaminated with oil from the gearbox, so we are
replacing the seal, clutch disk, pilot bearing and throwout bearing. Also,
the flywheel was etch by a >previous< clutch disk failure (the current disk
looks OK but is soaked in oil).

The exhaust is just a disaster (the center muffler pipe decayed and died,
and I just had the shop put in a center pipe instead of a resonator.
Don't do this! <g> It was obnoxious). So I have an Ansa set.

OK, so I'm begging for encouragement as well as info. <g>
