go out and buy another flywheel with a decent ring gear already on it.

There is an adjustment that you can do on the starter, which controls how
far the Bendix-drive pinion gear entends from from the starter in the
"out" position. I don't have my Bentley manual nearby, so I can't quote
chapter and verse, but the information is in there.
You do have the Bentley manual, don't you?

If you are going to do the engine rear seal, check the thrust-washers for
wear (measure end-float), and replace them if necessary.
