I recently took apart a pre-rubber rear bumper for a 1500 to put on MY 1500.
What I did with the mounting brackets for the two structural members (that
pick up near the middle of the bumper and connect it solidly to the rear
frame extensions), was to remove them. This leaves a bumper that is supported
in fewer places, but has no lumps or bumps. However, there are some holes
left in it that you might want to fill with a chrome-domed cap of some sort.
(The holes are squared off, which suggests something like an appropriately
sized chrome carriage bolt.)
The front (with the big yellow crushable blocks) is more of a problem.
