You said you rebuilt the SUs in 4 hours. Do you remember if the bushings 
came with the rebuild kit? I vaguely remember that somebody had some 
problems with replacing the bushings of the shafts. He sent them for 
rebushing away. 
At least in Roger Garnett's (12/5/91) "Tuning Your S.U. Carbs" one can find:
"The bushings and shafts can be replaced, but it requires some machining."
Did you replace them and did you do some machining?
