A delayed 1-2 shift *could* be a loose/worn front band. The adjuster is
external, left side, just above the shifter shaft. It's a long stud with
a lock nut on it. Back off the lock nit (3/4") and turn in the adjusting
stud (5/16" square) until it snugs up good. Then back the stud out 5/8's
of a turn and lock the jam nut.
Internal trans problems can also give this symptom. So can a poor running
engine... too much throttle required to make it move.

Nope, the XJS has a GM THM400. The XJ6 used a Borg Warner BW66. This box is
unique to the Jag, but has cousins in everything from AMCs to Volvos.
