You hit the nail right on the head. Just yesterday, I did a
312 mile drive in my 1966 MGB (Saskatoon-Prince Albert
National Park-Saskatoon for the locals, if any). About 20
miles from home it started to drizzle and, of course, I had
the top down. I decided to gamble and press on, since
putting up the top involves stopping, getting the frame
from the trunk, putting the frame together, putting the
frame on the car, and finally putting up the top over the
frame trying to get everything aligned and tight.
The dillema is that you have to gamble: You either drive on
a speed, which prevents you from getting wet because the
wind sweeps away most of the drops, and hope that the rain
stops before you reach the city limits where this does not
work, or you bite the bullet and stop to put up the top and
hope you will be able to do it before you are soaked.
Next time you see someone soaking wet driving a roadster
with the top down you are not looking at someone who is
though, but at someone who gambled and lost.
