Subject: Cleaning Air Filters

My TR4 shop manual tells me that the best way to clean the
permanent air filters is to "soak the filter in petrol" and
then "re-oil the mesh". Can anybody answer these questions
for me?
a) can I use something other than petrol, i.e. gunk, gumout,
etc. ?
b) what kind / weight of oil works best, and how much do I
use?
thanks,
