Jammed starters are a fairly common problem with early MGB's (and I suppose
MGAs). Generally it happens because the flywheel's teeth get worn where the
engine comes to rest always in the same place.
You can get it to disengage by pushing the car backwards while in second
gear. The real fix is to replace the ring gear on the flywheel. Although
you might be able to get by by remounting the flywheel on the engine 90
degrees from it's present position. In either case you have to remove the
engine, so you might as well do it right.
