I recently purchased a 79 Spitfire. It was running a bit rough with a high
low idle. I adjusted it down to 900 RPM and ran it without too much trouble
for about a month. One day last week, low on gas, I had trouble getting it
going and it ran real rough. I tried to adjust the carb (single Stromburg) and
found the autochoke unit dangling precariously off the carb. I tightened it
and couldn't get the car to start.
Jump starting it worked but it ran terrible. I got it to the office and it died.
It sat there for a week until yesterday when I got it run reallllly rough with
the thanks of some Gumout straight into the carb. It's home now. And I am
wondering if a rebuild is in order. I'v e got the Haynes book and will try the
directions again. I just don't know how touchy these carbs can be.

Another question I have. The dip stick shows plenty of oil. Yet, every time
I start the car it stinks and smoke seeps out from the center rear of the engine
(I can't pinpoint where it's coming from). Any ideas what it might be or how
to figure this out?
Ideas appreciated.
