Me again...
In short: success!
As per suggestions, I worked over my deceleration bypass valves. Both
were full of oil, hmm. After taking them apart and cleaning, I noticed
there is a nice rubber gasket at the end where the adjuster screw goes.
Since this looked like it would make a good air-tight seal against the
adjuster-screw plate, I took a chance and tapped out the little brass
caps that covered the ends. They came out real easy, just one little tap.
Now the screws are accessible from the outside. Was this some sort of
CA tamper-proof setup I just tampered with? I guess that makes me an
official Dreaded PO now.
Anyway, I unscrewed the screws as much as possible to create the max
spring pressure and keep the valves closed, re-installed and the idle
dropped way down. After re-sync'ing I get a fairly stable 900-1000rpm
idle, not too shakey. It still wanders, though...
I also now get a LOT more engine braking with lots of crackling backfire.
But now that I can adjust the bypass valves I suspect I'll try to set
them properly.
Oh, and I got quite a boost to my flagging power. In fact, when I romp
on it now the extra power is enough to overcome my marginal clutch and
it slips a bit. What was that about the Law of Conversation of Problems
in LBC's?
I'm net happy, but not looking forward to changing the clutch. Guess
I'll have to lay off the racing starts and general lead-footing until I
get around to it... :-(

PS Still collecting parts for my anti-sway bar end-link replacement.
Got some ANSI type-P headless bushings on order to use for spacers;
more as it develops.
