A swedish book on the subject of XK120/140/150
(actually a historical, ridicolously packed issue of the Swedish Jaguar Club
bullentin, #85 nov 1986, 450 pages!) tells the story of the early engines.

It says that in 1948 there were two engines ready for production,
a 4 cyl 1.995cc; 80.5 x 98 mm, and
  6 cyl 3.442cc; 83 x 106 mm.

The smaller engine was destined for a model XK100 which was never
put in production, no such car was built
although it appeared in early sales brochures.

50 engines of the 4 cyl version was produced, the text says that
Lofty England kept one engine and installed it temporarily in a
XK120 FHC, almost all of the remaining engines were destructed
and that one would still be in a museum today.

The engine is claimed also to have existed in a MG based record breaking
car in the late 40's, the EX135 run by Goldie Gardner.
At the Jabbeke track in Belgium it attacked the record
in 'International Class E', produced 140 hp
at 6,100 rpm and the EX135 reached 176,69 mph (284.35 km/h), all
according to my material.

My book has a b/w picture of Lofty England standing in a room filled
with some 30-40 XK100 engines.

Two reference books on the subject mentioned are :

'Climax in Coventry' by Walter Hassan, a well known Jag engine designer
'Jaguar Sports Cars' by Paul Skilleter, well known Jag book writer..
