Thanks to all people who sent messages regarding the problem of the
dead fuel, tach, and temp gauges on my '74 B. I finally got down to
working on the problem yesterday afternoon. After checking all the
fuses and finding them O.K., I discovered that the turn signals and
brake lights were inoperative. I hadn't noticed this the other night
because I was less than a block from my house when the problem
occurred. Anyway, I found that the gauges worked when I REMOVED one
of the fuses, but when I tried the brakes everything dropped to zero
again. Suspecting a bad contact at the fuse box, I sprayed the box
and connectors with WD-40 and, sure enough, everything worked, even
without the fuse in place. Now I am somewhat mystified by the
purpose of at least three of the fuses. My car has four fuses in the
box and another three in in-line fuseholders nearby. Looking at the
wiring diagrams in my Bentley manual I found that one of the fuses is
apparently for the seat-belt warning light, but I could find no
reference to the others.
