Hi all! Before I get into this, I should state that I have ordered my Bentley
manual, so soon I should be able to avoid asking these sorts of rote questions.
Amanda the Beloved TR6, after going in to the shop for "a few RCU's of work
which I wanted to do before painting her" was found to have a bad 'rear main
seal.' She had been losing oil, and this was the diagnosis. My question is,
what (in the gross sense) has to be done to repair this? Do you have to pull
the engine? The tranny?
Also, the shop said that although she's losing oil (qt/100-150mi) she's lubri-
cating fine, so as long as I don't mind paying for the oil, driving her is OK.
The reason I asked is that I can't afford the 9 RCU they want to fix it, so I
would have to commute for a few paychecks until I can save it. I trust these
folks; I just wanted to ask the net for my own peace of mind. Is this OK? Is
there a possibility that the seal, while leaking now, might catastrophically
fail in transit and dump all my oil onto Rt. 128?
Thanks!
