Question: You say that all duties and fees have been paid for the
importation. Would this particular car, though, be now exempt from
U.S. EPA and DOT safety standards? If I recall, BFSLMC stopped sending
Stags to the USA after the 1973 year. Therefore, there would not even be a
comparable U.S. spec model. Assuming one would have to federalize the
car, that could get fairly involved: correct windshield, lighting,
door guard beams, impact bumpers (5 mph in 1974 if I remember correctly), DOT
approved seat/shoulder belts, etc. Not to mention the smog and
evaporative emissions stuff.
I'm not that familiar with importation laws, although I do remember
hearing of some sort of one-time exemption. Even there, I'm not sure
whether that would apply to anyone but that person who actually
imported the vehicle.
All this could add up to a very expensive deal, regardless of your
purchase price. (Is it possible that the above is REALLY why it's
still sitting?)
