I've read of a method where you grease the tap and back the tap completely out every full turn, remove the chips that the grease has caught, regrease, and run the tap in one more turn than the last time. I think it's in the back of Lindsey Porter's Midget book in the air pollution control section (how to tap the hole left by removing the 90 degree elbow from the intake manifold for a threaded plug without removing the manifold).
