TR Gear box installation:

(assuming you are doing it with the engine in the car)
Remove the oilite pilot shaft bushing from the end of the crank and
examine it. Try it on the transmission pilot shaft and make sure it
hasn't gotten muchroomed or egged out or dinged. If you have a spare
old pilot shaft you can check it without removing it.

After you reinstall it, use the spare shaft or your trick tool to
center the clutch disk before the bolts in the pressure plate are
installed. The pilot tool should be well centered and have about the
same amount of play or clearance side to side and up and down.

Install the throw out bearing on the forks and wire the actuation lever
in the fully retracted position. ( it's a pain in the butt to get the
trans in and then find the bearing on the floor.)

Put a jack and a block under the back of the engine oil pan or use a
"cherry picker" so you can move the back of the engine up or down
to facilitate straight alignment of the trannie to the engine.

Get a couple largish longish phillips screw drivers and a couple of
5/16 bolts and nuts maybe four inches long.

Offer up the transmission. (I've always wanted an opportunity to say that 8^)
Use the long screwdrivers through a couple of the bell housing bolt holes
(say in the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock holes) and their coresponding holes
in the back of the engine to act as long guide pins.

The transmission tailshaft housing will probably be balanced on top of
drive shaft tunnel at this point. Jack the engine up or down in order to
have about the same gap at the bottom of the bell housing(to engine) and
at the top of the bellhousing. Thus the trans is going in straight with
respect to the engine.

You may need to put the trans in fourth gear and turn the flange on the
tail shaft, in order to rotate the pilot shaft splines.

At this point I am usually on my back under the car where I can shake or
wiggle the trans into place. Or you if you are inside the car, you can use
a piece of 2x4 about the size of a base ball bat (cricket bat is optional)
as a lever under the back of the trans to wiggle it up and down as you
push it home.

Use the long 5/16 bolts through a couple of the bellhousing hole to keep
you from loosing ground as you progress. Don't actually use them to pull
it up. It could bind an do damage. Just do them finger tight so you don't
loose the ground you've gained..

Note no mention is made of lubricant on the spline of pilot. I can think
of no advantage to lube and LOTS of disadvantage.

It's effort but it's not mysterious. It helps to have a friend help.
This is from memory so I may have missed something, but I've done many,
and I think I covered the important parts.

Good luck
Dick
