If your float level is off you can very easily have a too rich
mixture.
What happens is the carb will "dump" fuel into the engine. A bad thing
since this can "wash" the rings and fill the sump full of gas! (And it
happens) By the way, make sure that there is a heat shield between the
carb fuel bowls and the manifolds. The heat can "boil" out the gas and
cause vapor lock once the fuel comes from pressure to atmosphere.
Also, the needle/seat arrangement is not the greatest in SU carbs.
Check out a thing called the "Gross valve" you can find it advertised
in Hemmings Motor News (a magazine available at good newsstands and
bookstores) this wonderful device is just two balls which meter fuel
much better than the needle/seat arrangement and THEY WORK!
Look to the Haynes manual on SU carbs for specs to adjust floats. Also
check to make sure the float has no holes in it and is not "filling-up"
with fuel itself.
