Howdy netlanders,
anyone out there have a magic solution for a recently rebuilt 1275 that has a
severe oil leak at the rear main and probably the rear pan gasket too. i
suspect blowby due to unseated rings, but i have quite a few miles on the
beast now and this past sat. i ran it all the way up to Mt. Hamiliton on non
degergent 30w. it rewarded me by pumping out about a Qt. every 40 miles.
Embrassing to even stop. This short block was built up by Butch Gilbert who
has years of experience building 1275 race engines. so very big mystery.
butch thinks my needles may be wrong for the set up we have and i may be
running rich at high speed, washing down the rings. but the plugs don't
support this.
i rigged a pcv, but that didn't help. i left off the valve cover filler cap.
no help. tonight i pulled the pan and checked bearing clearances.
seem right on. going to very carefully refit the pan gaskets. any tips
here??
any tips at all?
by the way , it goes like stink! and the 5 speed conversion worked out
beautifully......if it only didn't leak, quarts! I'll accept the usual brit
leakage rate......a few spots at the end of a run, but this is rediculas!
for those who may have missed it, this is a 1275 in a 1938 MG TA
now with datsun 5 speed gear box and midget 4.55:1 rear end ratio.
any advice greatly appreciated.
