I want to thank everyone who came up with suggestions to help me put my
5-speed where it belongs!

This information was very helpful:

There _is_ a ledge to stop the pilot bearing from dropping too deep
into the crankshaft. (the hole is much deeper than the bearing)

Even though the splines were enguaged, the transmission didn't want
to go the last ~1". Rotating the engine (by hand) while applying
forward pressure on the trans helped this quite a bit.

There were other suggestions, but I can't think of them right now as I am
still waking up. :)

Thanks to all who helped!

P.S. In an emergency, 1/2" (heater core/radiator) hose works great for a
quick replacement of worn/missing rubber shift-extension isolators.
Just cut it about 3/16" too long, and it will compress to take up the
     slack. :)
