I have a few additions:
The early 1147 Spit motors were different than the later 1147 motors...
The early 1147's had a small journal camshaft that rode in the block.
Later, they bored out the block, used can bearings, and kept the small
journal cam. Long 'bout 1966, they went to a larger journal on the cam, and
dropped the bearings again.
In addition, the Herald engines (and maybe the very early Spits) used a smaller
diameter cam follower. Having the block machined to take the larger
followers cannot be done at most machine shops either as they are at kinda
a funny angle.
Bob - stuck with a small journal/small follower 1147 block - Bownes
